Prom Stress

At this time of the year proms, Jr. proms and other end of the year celebration dances and parties are just around the corner. The teen magazines are stuffed with slinky dresses and prom fantasy nights. But, for many girls that are struggling with weight (and even those not struggling) this time of year feels like anything but a fantasy.

You may be thinking that you’ll never look like the models (or even like some of your friends). You may also be worrying that you won’t have a date for the prom. You’re not the only one feeling this way! Here’s a link to a good article about prom stress (I was quoted in it!)

I can’t promise you that your prom will be all that you wish it would be, but please don’t get swept up in the media’s idea of what prom “should” be. It is really just another party—it’s not the biggest or most special event of your entire life. You CAN go to prom without a date—lots of girls go in groups with their close friends. And, most importantly, you WILL look beautiful and have a good time whether or not you are at the perfect weight. If you don’t go to the prom (or other party), remember, there are many ways to celebrate the milestones in your life—prom isn’t the only way. So, don’t use prom as an excuse to go on a drastic diet . Also don’t use unhappy feelings about prom as an excuse to overeat or stop exercising.

Don’t let holiday eating get you down

Passover and Easter are two of the big eating holidays of the year! So, how did you do? Do you feel like you “lost” all your good habits, and that you’re back where you started because of one or two days of “bad” eating? Thinking like this is NOT HELPFUL and it’s not true!! Part of life is eating during the holidays. As long as you go back to your new healthy eating habits and get back to exercising, you’re still doing great. Focus on all the great changes you’re making, whether they’re big or small. Don’t focus on the small dip in your will power. Think about what you might do differently for the next holiday or “big eating” event. Learn from the one that just passed, but don’t be too hard on yourself!

flavored cigars and cigarettes -a health hazard in disguise

I’ve been reading a lot lately about teens smoking candy-flavored cigarettes and cigars instead of regular ones. It seems that these sweet, sugary alternatives are flavored and and marketed in a way to get kids hooked on smoking. I’m sure that girls also smoke them as a substitute for eating because they can get a “sweet”, “junkfood” fix without the calories. Don’t be fooled!! It doesn’t matter how good you make tobacco taste, it’s still bad for you. It also won’t help you to lose weight, or keep the weight off. In fact, it doesn’t really make sense to substitute one addictive behavior (eating without being hungry) for another addictive behavior (smoking). So…if you don’t smoke, don’t start and if you do smoke, start trying to stop. Stay Smart, Stay Healthy
