Alcohol, drugs and weight

Posted by Dr. Susan on February 28, 2006

A new study shows that girls are smoking, drinking and using drugs more than ever before! One of the reasons for this is to try and lose weight. Some girls I’ve spoken to feel that when they smoke cigarettes or use certain illegal drugs that they are less likely to eat. They have also tried taking diet pills to lose weight. Now, let’s think about this for a minute…does it really make sense to put your health and even your life in danger to lose weight?? The reality is that alcohol can only make you gain weight because it’s filled with empty calories and the more buzzed you are, the less likely you are to pay attention to eating healthily; cigarettes can eventually kill you–you knew that, right; and diet pills and illegal drugs are also really, really dangerous for your body. So, if you smoke cigarettes, try and stop as soon as possible because the longer you smoke, the harder it is to quit. If you drink or use drugs, please do so as responsibly as possible, never using so much that you lose control or put yourself in danger. If you’re drinking or using because you feel depressed, speak to an adult you trust. AND, if you need to lose weight, do it slowly and healthily. Your body will thank you for it. If you must catch a buzz, make it a small one!!
